Farewell Letter and Picture Sign Up Sheet

GRADE 8 FAREWELL
FAIRHAVEN SCHOOL
May 2011

Dear Grade 8 Students and Families:

This letter is written to inform you of the final details regarding the Grade 8 Farewell.  At the present time, grade 8 farewell will be going ahead the same as usual with the hopes that contract negotiations will taken care of by then.

FAREWELL (Monday, June 27th @ 7:00 p.m.)

Dress - We would like to keep dress fairly casual so that the students can wear the clothes again.  .

Number of Guests - Each student is allowed to invite eight-ten adult guests (usually parents/guardians, grandparents and ect.).    Invitations will be given to the students this week.  In some circumstances it may be necessary for more guests to attend the program.  We would like to be sensitive to this; however, we need to ensure that we have adequate space to hold the program and maintain a relaxed atmosphere.  If there are special circumstances please indicate them on the attached information sheet or contact the student’s homeroom teacher.  Family, friends, etc. are invited to a reenactment of the Farewell Ceremony, which will take place on Tuesday, June 28th,  at 10:50 a.m.

Class Photograph – A class photograph will be taken by Carman Mose Photography this year.  This is the first time we have used Carman; we chose to do so because she gives a much better deal compared to who we used in the past.  Below is a letter from Carmen:

Session fee of $20.00 per graduate includes all post-processing time of photos, as well as a DVD disc of all your edited and retouched photos for printing at your leisure. My hope would be to meet at an outdoor location.  This provides the opportunity for a fun and creative atmosphere.    For a class of around 30 students we would need one hour to ensure a group photo is included and opportunity for each graduate to get in front of the camera! In case of inclement weather, an indoor location would be arranged.  Please check out my website www.carmansphotography.ca
Carman Mose
In order to ensure that students have plenty of time to get their pictures prior to the ceremony and still have time to get something to eat, pictures will begin at 4 pm and will run until 5pm.  Students should sign up in groups of 5 and the sign-up sheet will be posted in the classroom and on the class blog.

Farewell Program – The program at the school will begin at 7:00 p.m. sharp on Monday, June 23rd.   Guests should arrive early to find their seats and take any pictures.  The ceremony will likely end at approximately 8:00-:30 p.m.  After the ceremony, there will be a dessert/tea put on by the Mr. Johnston’s grade six/seven class in the library.  The dessert/tea will be a place where family and friends can meet and talk for a while.  At about 9:00 p.m., the service will be over. Shortly, there will be a notice sent out by the after-farewell planning committee outlining the after farewell party.

Video Yearbook – A personal copy of the video yearbook (in DVD form with cover) will be available for all members of the Class of 2010/11. Students will be making the video yearbook using OneTrueMedia.  A copy of the video will also be posted on our class blog and each student’s blog

Farewell Slideshow a copy of the slideshow will also be posted on student’s blogs.

If you have any questions or concerns, please contact me at your earliest convenience at cattonc@spsd.sk.ca .  Thank you in advance for your support of this endeavor

IMPORTANT NOTICE TO GRADE 8 PARENTS

I am sorry to announce that Project Business, scheduled for next Thursday and Friday, has been permanently cancelled to the break down of negotiations between teachers and the provincial  government and the impending withdrawal of professional  and volunteer services next Wednesday and Thursday.  Please cancel any bookings you have made for the various student run businesses.

I am also sorry to announce that the grade6-8 Spring bike trip to Anglin Lake has also been permanently cancelled.  If you have booked time off to help with the trip or practice rides, please try to re-arrange your holidays.  There may be a chance that we will do a day bike trip, but at this time nothing in set is set in stone.

Free Verse and Slam Poetry

Free Verse Poetry

Free verse poetry is free from the normal rules of poetry. The poet may choose to include some rhyming words but the poem does not have to rhyme. A free verse poem may be just a sentence that is artistically laid out on the page or it can be pages of words. Some forms of free verse separate, or split, phrases and words between lines. Punctuation may be absent or it may be used to place greater emphasis on specific words. The main object of free verse is to use colorful words, punctuation, and word placement to convey meaning to the reader.

Heroes Are…….
sometimes…….
courageous collaborators,
sometimes…….
originators of opportunities,
sometimes…….
champions of coincidence or circumstance.
Sometimes……
heroes act through intelligence
and at other times…….
through ignorance.

A Hero Could Be
a main character in some work of literature,
simply a person,
or perhaps a mythological being of great courage and strength,
someone with a cause,
perhaps even a sandwich. . .
or,
a hero could be you!

Heroes May Be

Boisterous, bold, brash, and loud – Yee Haw!
Or swift, silent, and sly – Woosh,
Or even filled with woes – Boo hoo.
They may crave attention – Ta da!
Or they may ask for no one to mention – Shhhh. . .
Just how they made a difference.

Model Writing Free Verse
·         The first step in writing a free verse poem is to choose a topic.  Free verse, like other forms of poetry, can make a seemingly common or ordinary person, place, thing, or experience into something special or extraordinary.  Use your experiences and feelings to brainstorm free verse topics
·         Free verse is a controlled list of colorful, thought provoking words about a topic.
·         All good writers revise your work until you feel that the words say what they want them to say in the best way.
·         Use your  five senses to describe the topic. (Sunlight looks like. . . , sounds like. . . , feels like. . . , smells like. . . , tastes like. . . )
Reminder:  Alliteration, Personification, Assonance, Onomatopoeia, Internal Rhyming, Simile and Metaphor

Sunday Night Meltdown
Suddenly remembering
(on Sunday night)
that I have homework
due Monday morning……..
The end of my weekend…….
like the end of a Popsicle…….
instead of one last lick…….
a taste of stick.

Black Bear
The black bear goes
to the river
he tries to spot a fish
he sees one
he sticks his paws
in the water
he gets one
but it slips out
of his paws
he tries again
but it slips again
the black bear
decides to get some
berries instead
he gets them
he finds a log
and has a
snooze for the day.
